Millions of fans fete victorious Blackhawks

CHICAGO (AP) ? From the jubilant parade all the way to the boisterous rally, millions of excited fans spent a sun-drenched Friday celebrating another Stanley Cup title for the Chicago Blackhawks.

Dressed mostly in red and black, they came out to say thanks for the memories. Turns out, captain Jonathan Toews and Co. wanted to return the favor.

"This shows how unbelievable this city is," Toews said, addressing the rapt crowd at Grant Park. "Unbelievable. Thank you."

The Blackhawks rode to the rally in red, open-topped buses, passing waving and screaming fans of every age as the parade traveled from the United Center to the downtown party. Toews hoisted the Stanley Cup over his head to show it off to the crowd, which was cooled by large water misters placed along the route with temperatures in the low 80s.

One of the many signs read "Thank you, guys" on the top line and "Best 17 seconds of my life" for the second part ? referring to the pair of late goals that lifted the Blackhawks to a 3-2 title-clinching victory over the Boston Bruins on Monday night. And there was at least one expression of love for Andrew Shaw, the hardscrabble forward who required stitches on his face after he was hit by a puck Monday.

It was the second championship in four seasons for the Blackhawks, and authorities thought Friday's crowd was even heartier than the 2 million that came out in 2010.

"What do you say we get back here and do it again next year?" forward Patrick Sharp said to a big cheer at the rally.

The Grant Park crowd also enjoyed a brief but colorful speech by normally reserved goaltender Corey Crawford, who drew wide grins and chuckles from his teammates.

"It's tough to follow that speech by Corey Crawford," Toews said after he carried the Cup onto the stage.

Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said 42 people were taken to hospitals with heat-related health problems. He also said 20 people jumped into a restricted part of Lake Michigan and the fire department made sure that all 20 came out of the water.

The massive crowd at the park grew steadily all morning long, with the most ardent supporters camping out overnight, ready to sprint to the big stage the minute police swung the barriers aside. By the time buses delivered the players and their families, the park was packed.

Some fans brought along homemade versions of the Stanley Cup, including one fashioned from an empty beer keg. Twenty-somethings Courtney Baldwin and Meghan O'Kane, from the city's suburbs, slapped together their tribute from a jumble of jugs and plastic bowls painted grey.

It was empty Friday morning, but Baldwin said they planned to fill it with an adult beverage in the afternoon ? a common occurrence for the actual silver trophy over the past week.

One fan who dashed to the front near the stage was Michael Wilczynski, a 26-year-old sales associate from the suburbs. His father took him to his first game and they partied together downtown after the last Stanley Cup victory.

"My dad died in February. We came to 2010. I'm not going to miss this. I had to be here," he said.

The Blackhawks gave the city something to celebrate as the Cubs and White Sox grind through another lost summer. And fans took note.

"We love the Blackhawks. This is history and this is a championship, unlike the Cubs," O'Kane said, taking a shot at a team that hasn't won a World Series since 1908.

The franchise's fifth Stanley Cup was the culmination of a banner season for the Blackhawks, who set an NHL record when they recorded at least one point in the first 24 games ? half of the lockout-shortened schedule. They finished with the best record in the league.

The dramatic Game 6 victory in Boston sparked a raucous party in parts of Chicago. Fans poured out of bars after the thrilling finish and celebrated in the streets in the several neighborhoods.

Sarah Schmidt, 22, who grew up in Chicago and made the pilgrimage to Friday's celebrations from Milwaukee, told her boss she was taking the day off no matter what. She hoped her bartending gig would still be there when the party was over.

"I can't miss this," she said.

Daily Chronicle | Goodbye M&M's, hello granola bars

WASHINGTON ? Kids, your days of blowing off those healthier school lunches and filling up on cookies from the vending machine are numbered. The government is onto you.

For the first time, the Agriculture Department is telling schools what sorts of snacks they can sell. The new restrictions announced Thursday fill a gap in nutrition rules that allowed many students to load up on fat, sugar and salt despite the existing guidelines for healthy meals.

?Parents will no longer have to worry that their kids are using their lunch money to buy junk food and junk drinks at school,? said Margo Wootan, a nutrition lobbyist for the Center for Science in the Public Interest who pushed for the new rules.

That doesn?t mean schools will be limited to doling out broccoli and brussels sprouts.

Snacks that still make the grade include granola bars, low-fat tortilla chips, fruit cups and 100 percent fruit juice. And high school students can buy diet versions of soda, sports drinks and iced tea.

But say goodbye to some beloved school standbys, such as doughy pretzels, chocolate chip cookies and those little ice cream cups with their own spoons. Some may survive in low-fat or whole wheat versions. The idea is to weed out junk food and replace it with something with nutritional merit.

The bottom line, says Wootan: ?There has to be some food in the food.?

Still, 17-year-old Vanessa Herrera is partial to the Cheez-It crackers and sugar-laden Vitaminwater in her high school?s vending machine. Granola bars and bags of peanuts? Not so much.

?I don?t think anyone would eat it,? said Herrera of Rockaway, N.J.

There are no vending machines at Lauren Jones? middle school in Hoover, Ala., but she said there?s an ?a la carte? stand that sells chips, ice cream and other snacks.

?Having something sweet to go with your meal is good sometimes,? the 13-year-old said, although she also thinks that encouraging kids to eat healthier is worthwhile.

The federal snack rules don?t take effect until the 2014-15 school year, but there?s nothing to stop schools from making changes earlier.

Some students won?t notice much difference. Many schools already are working to improve their offerings. Thirty-nine states have some sort of snack food policy in place.

Rachel Snyder, 17, said earlier this year her school in Washington, Ill., stripped its vending machines of sweets. She misses the pretzel-filled M&M?s.

?If I want a sugary snack every now and then,? Snyder said, ?I should be able to buy it.?

The federal rules put calorie, fat, sugar and sodium limits on almost everything sold during the day at 100,000 schools ? expanding on the previous rules for meals. The Agriculture Department sets nutritional standards for schools that receive federal funds to help pay for lunches, and that covers nearly every public school and about half of private ones.

One oasis of sweetness and fat will remain: Anything students bring from home, from bagged lunches to birthday cupcakes, is exempt from the rules.

The Agriculture Department was required to draw up the rules under a law passed by Congress in 2010, championed by first lady Michelle Obama, as part of the government?s effort to combat childhood obesity.

Nutritional guidelines for subsidized lunches were revised last year and put in place last fall.

Last year?s rules making main lunch fare more nutritious faced criticism from some conservatives, including some Republicans in Congress, who said the government shouldn?t be telling kids what to eat. Mindful of that backlash, the Agriculture Department left one of the more controversial parts of the rule, the regulation of in-school fundraisers like bake sales, up to the states.

The rules have the potential to transform what many children eat at school.

In addition to meals already subject to nutrition standards, most lunchrooms also have ?a la carte? lines that sell other ? often greasy foods like mozzarella sticks and nachos. That gives students a way to circumvent the healthy lunches. Under the rules, those lines could offer healthier pizzas, low-fat hamburgers, fruit cups or yogurt and similar fare.

One of the biggest changes will be a near-ban on high-calorie sports drinks. Many beverage companies added sports drinks to school vending machines after sodas were pulled in response to criticism from the public health community.

The rule would only allow sales in high schools of sodas and sports drinks that contain 60 calories or less in a 12-ounce serving, banning the highest-calorie versions of those beverages.

Low-calorie sports drinks ? Gatorade?s G2, for example ? and diet drinks will be allowed in high school.

Elementary and middle schools will be allowed to sell only water, carbonated water, 100 percent fruit or vegetable juice, and low fat and fat-free milk, including nonfat flavored milks.

Republicans have continued to scrutinize the efforts to make school foods healthier, and at a House subcommittee hearing Thursday, Rep. Todd Rokita, R-Ind., said the ?stringent rules are creating serious headaches for schools and students.?

One school nutritionist testified that her school has had difficulty adjusting to the 2012 changes, and the new ?a la carte? standards could also be a hardship.

The healthier foods are expensive, said Sandra Ford, president of the School Nutrition Association and director of food and nutrition services for a school district in Bradenton, Fla. She also predicted that her school district could lose $975,000 a year under the new ?a la carte? guidelines because they would have to eliminate many of the popular foods they sell.

In a report released at the hearing, the Government Accountability Office said that in some districts students were having trouble adjusting to the new foods, leading to increased waste and kids dropping out of the school lunch program.

The food industry has been onboard with many of the changes, and several companies worked with Congress on the child nutrition law three years ago.

Angela Chieco, a mother from Clifton Park, N.Y., sees the guidelines as a good start but says it will take a bigger campaign to wean kids off junk food.

?I try to do less sugar myself,? Chieco said. ?It?s hard to do.?

All Business is People Business - Brian Tracy International

Written By Brian Tracy | Business Success | June 27th, 2013 | No Comments ?

your business-networking skills-people businessAll business is people business. The people you attract on the road to wealth will determine your success as much as, or more than any other factor. At the same time, the mistakes you make in choosing these people will hinder you and hold you back as much or more than anything else. People are everything!

Networking Skills and Why Business is People Business

Networking skills are crucial to your business success. Join local business associations and attend meetings regularly. Introduce yourself to other members and ask what they do. Do not talk about your own products or services. Instead, encourage other members to sell their products and services to you. People in business love to talk about their work. When you show a genuine interest, they will tell you in great detail what they do and how things are going. Listen intently when they speak.

Make No Effort to Sell

In this description of networking, you will notice that I advised against trying to sell your products or services to the people you meet. By the Law of Indirect Effort, the more you don?t try to sell your product or service to people you meet, the more likely it is that they will become interested in learning about what you make or sell. The less you say, the greater the impression you make. The more you encourage a person to talk about his or her product or service, the more likely it is that he or she will be interested in your product or service.

Finding the People You Need for Your Business

When you start your business, you will have to do everything yourself. But as soon as you begin selling and delivering your products and services, you will need help. How do you decide which people you need? How do you select them? Fortunately, these questions have been asked and answered successfully millions of times. One of the most important of all business principles is ?think on paper.? Success begins with a pad of paper, a pen, and you.

Describe Every Function

Make a list of every step or function that is necessary for you to create, acquire, market, sell, deliver, get paid, and service your product. What are the steps, from beginning to end? Instead of writing a job description, write a ?function description.? Each job is made up of one or more functions. For example, when someone phones your office in response to an advertisement, the functions may include answering the phone, identifying the problem or need of the customer, transferring the call to the proper person, making the sale or taking the information for a sales call, processing the order, shipping the product, collecting payment or billing for the product, accounting for the sale, arranging to replenish inventory, reporting the sale to the business owner, and so on.

Action Exercise

Identify at least one business group or organization that you can join. Attend meetings regularly. Increase your networking skills, make networking with other businesspeople a regular part of your business life. Remember, all business is people business!

Devo drummer Alan Myers dies of brain cancer

Alan Myers, the former longtime drummer for the band Devo, best known for "Whip It," has died after a battle with brain cancer. He was 58.

Myers died Monday in Los Angeles, where he lived, Devo spokesman Michael Pilmer said Wednesday.

Myers was the band's drummer from 1976 to 1985 during Devo's heyday. The group was formed in Akron, Ohio, in the early 1970s by Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale, and introduced themselves to the world in 1977 by making a frenetic version of the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction."

Casale told The Associated Press on Wednesday that without Myers, Devo never would have reached the heights it did, calling him the best drummer he has ever played with.

"We were mostly in basements and garages writing songs. It was Alan that brought everything to life," Casale said. "That was the catalyst where everything clicked."

He called Myers "the human metronome."

"People watching him thought we were using a drum machine," Casale said. "Nobody had ever drummed like that."

Casale described meeting and playing with Myers for the first time in 1976. After their first session ended, Casale ? who had been facing away from Myers ? turned around to see the drummer standing on one leg with his eyes closed, practicing the meditative Chinese martial art of Tai Chi.

"I thought, 'Man, this guy really is Devo. He fits right in,'" Casale said, adding that Tai Chi was one of the drummer's greatest passions. "Some bands would be doing drugs and drinking. Alan would find quiet places backstage and do a full session of Tai Chi."

Devo is short for devolution, the idea that man was devolving into its monkey state.

Supreme Court declines to take up two more gay rights cases

By Lawrence Hurley

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Supreme Court, a day after deciding two major cases on gay marriage, declined on Thursday to take up two more cases on the issue.

The cases concerned Nevada's ban on same-sex marriage, and an Arizona law that denies state benefits to "domestic partners."

The court declined to take the cases without comment. Its action means an appeals court ruling striking down the Arizona law stays in effect, while litigation over the Nevada law will continue.

On Wednesday the justices struck down a key part of a federal law, the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), that denied federal benefits to same-sex married couples.

The justices avoided deciding the constitutionality of a California law enacted in 2008, called Proposition 8, that banned gay marriage. The justices found that supporters of the law did not have standing to appeal a federal district court ruling that struck it down.

The Arizona case concerns a law that limits health benefits to employees' spouses and dependants, thereby excluding domestic partners, including those in same-sex relationships. Gay marriage is not recognized in Arizona.

Prior to the law being enacted via a ballot initiative in November 2008, the state had for several months allowed same-sex domestic partners to receive health benefits.

Gay and lesbian state employees sued before the new law was due to go into effect in January 2011, saying it violated their equal protection rights under the U.S. Constitution.

A federal district court issued a preliminary injunction preventing the law from going in effect. The San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld that ruling in September 2011, prompting the state's appeal to the Supreme Court.

In the other case, supporters of Nevada's constitutional ban on same-sex marriage asked the Supreme Court to rule definitively that states could limit the definition of marriage to opposite-sex couples.

The case arose when eight same-sex couples either tried to get married in Nevada or asked the state to recognize their out-of-state marriages. A federal court dismissed their claim. The case is pending before an appeals court, but the supporters of the ban asked the Supreme Court to take an early look at the issue.

The Arizona case is Brewer v. Diaz, U.S. Supreme Court, No. 12-33. The Nevada case is Coalition for the Protection of Marriage v. Sevick, U.S. Supreme Court, No. 12-689.

Dem Rep. Markey wins US Senate election in Mass.

BOSTON (AP) ? Longtime Democratic U.S. Rep. Edward Markey defeated Republican political newcomer Gabriel Gomez in a special election on Tuesday for the state's U.S. Senate seat long held by John Kerry, a race that failed to draw the attention that the state's 2010 special Senate election did.

Markey, 66, won the early backing of Kerry and much of the state's Democratic political establishment, which was set on avoiding a repeat of the stunning loss it suffered three years ago, when Republican state Sen. Scott Brown upset Democratic state Attorney General Martha Coakley in the election to replace the late Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy.

Gomez, a 47-year-old businessman and former Navy SEAL, positioned himself as a moderate and Washington outsider who would challenge partisan gridlock, contrasting himself with Markey, who was first elected to the U.S. House in 1976.

Markey had an advantage of about 8 percentage points over Gomez with most precincts reporting late Tuesday, according to unofficial returns. He took to Twitter to thank voters after his victory.

"Thank you Massachusetts!" he tweeted. "I am deeply honored for the opportunity to serve you in the United States Senate."

Gomez said he called Markey to congratulate him and wished him "nothing but the best."

In a concession speech to supporters, Gomez said he was a better person as a result of the campaign and believed Markey would be a better senator having gone through the election.

Gomez said he'd waged the campaign with honor and integrity but was "massively outspent" by Democrats in the five-month election and was facing the might of the national Democratic Party.

Markey outspent Gomez throughout the race, and Republicans were unable to match a well-oiled Democratic field organization in an election that saw relatively light turnout in much of the heavily Democratic state.

Kerry left the Senate this year after being confirmed as U.S. secretary of state. Markey will fill out the remainder of Kerry's term, which expires in January 2015, meaning that another Senate election will be held a year from November.

Though Markey has a lengthy career in Congress, he will become the state's junior senator to Elizabeth Warren, who has been in office less than six months after defeating Brown last November.

Markey led in pre-election polls but said Tuesday when he voted with his wife in his hometown, Malden, that there was no overconfidence in his organization. He had said the campaign called or rang the doorbells of 3 million prospective voters in the past several days.

"I have delivered a message on gun safety, on a woman's right to choose, on creating more jobs, and I think that message has been delivered," Markey said.

President Barack Obama, former President Bill Clinton and Vice President Joe Biden visited Massachusetts over the final two weeks of the campaign to shore up support for Markey.

Gomez said while voting Tuesday in Cohasset, where he lives with his wife and children, that the election was about choosing the future over the past and what he called Markey's failure to take on the important issues despite 37 years in office.

"Where I come from, that is mission incomplete," he said.

In Cambridge, Lori Berenson, 51, said she voted for Markey mainly because she was skeptical of one of Gomez's main campaign pitches: his request for just 17 months in office.

"He thinks in 17 months he's going to accomplish what Markey hasn't done in 37 years?" she said.

But David Wanders, 43, of Stoughton, said he voted for Gomez because he felt Markey had been in Washington too long.

"He's a lifer," said Wanders, an independent who voted for Obama in the last election. "I don't think he lives here. He lives in Washington."

Markey spent more than $8.6 million on the race through the end of the last reporting period June 5, compared with $2.3 million by Gomez, according to Federal Election Commission records.

Outside groups also poured about $6 million into the Markey-Gomez contest, in the absence of an agreement between the candidates akin to one that had kept most outside money out of last year's Warren-Brown race.

Among the big independent spenders were a Republican-backed super political action committee funded by John Jordan, a California-based donor, and NextGen, a super PAC financed by another wealthy Californian, Thomas Steyer, who supported Markey largely because of his opposition to the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline, which would carry oil from western Canada to Texas.

Also on the ballot was Richard Heos, affiliated with the Twelve Visions Party.

Citizen Eco-Drive Proximity

Smartwatches face a number of hurdles. Many simply don't look like watches most people would want to wear, and battery life limitations make them another device you need to keep charged. Citizen addresses both of these issues with its Eco-Drive Proximity?it looks and feels like a high-end watch, and it's solar-powered, so you won't have to worry about regular charging. At $495 (direct), it's actually more affordable than most Citizen watches, but still far more expensive than competing smartwatches like the Pebble?or the Metawatch Strata. Functionality here is also pared down significantly when compared with the competition. If you can afford it, the Proximity is easily the best looking smartwatch around, but you sacrifice some usability in the bargain.

Design, Features, and Setup
It turns out the best looking smartwatch comes from an actual watch maker?go figure. The Eco-Drive Proximity looks and feels a lot like Citizen's more traditional Perpetual Chrono watches, complete with stainless steel cases and a watch face adorned with all manner of intricately machined dials, markers, and ticking hands. The level of detail and precision in its design is impressive, even if that's to be expected. It's a sizable and substantial watch with a build quality that honestly puts the Pebble or Metawatch to shame?this thing could probably stop a bullet.

inlineThe watch face has a mildly iridescent, reflective sheen with glowing accents. It comes in either black with green highlights or silver with blue highlights; the former gives off a more hacker vibe, while the latter hides its nerdy guts a bit better. The black leather strap is perforated and lined with a nylon backing. It's a handsome timepiece, no doubt, but I'm not sold on the bold color accents?it's more geek chic than boardroom bound.

Setup can be a bit cumbersome, and the tiny engravings with confusing abbreviations will have you referring to the user manual well after the watch is paired. At the crux of the Proximity's operation is the rotating crown on the side and a mode dial at the six o'clock position. The crown has three positions: The innermost locks modes, the middle lets you change modes, and the outermost lets you access mode-specific features.

The Proximity connects to the iPhone 4S or later using low-energy Bluetooth 4.0?I tested with an iPhone 5. You'll need to download the free iOS app and set the mode dial to the PR position, then select scan in the app and find the Proximity. After that, you're all set. Like its name suggests, the Proximity will automatically re-pair with your device when in range, so you only have to do this once.

Usage and Notifications
The Proximity essentially only has two "smart" features. First and foremost, it can alert you to incoming notifications. The key word here is alert?unlike the Pebble or Metawatch, the Proximity just tells you if you have an incoming call, email, or calendar event. It doesn't give any more context or information. On top of that, the alerts can be a bit difficult to decipher at first. Basically, the second hand will swing to one of four positions: CALL, ACT, LL, or MAIL. CALL just means call. ACT means the Proximity is in the process of doing something, like syncing time or attempting to re-connect. LL indicates a lost connection. MAIL means either an incoming email or, curiously, a calendar event. Even more curious, the Proximity doesn't actually use your iPhone's native mail app for email alerts; you have to enter your email IMAP settings into the app and set the mail checking interval. It takes some time to learn all the abbreviations and alerts, but in my tests they were pretty instantaneous. The Proximity also vibrates on alerts, but it was so gentle that I didn't notice it every time.

The second feature is the ability to remotely trigger your iPhone to vibrate and sound off an alarm. This is actually a pretty useful trick, as I can't tell you how often I misplace my phone. To trigger the alarm, simply press and hold the two buttons that flank the crown. Your iPhone will vibrate and play a jingle that sounds eerily similar to "Under the Sea." The alarm also sounds regardless of whether your iPhone is set to silent or not.

Like other Eco-Drive watches, the Proximity is solar powered, meaning you'll never have to charge it. It charges when exposed to both natural and artificial light?perfect for the windowless PCMag Labs. Really, though, this is a huge advantage over the Pebble or Metawatch, both of which need to be charged at least once a week. A smartwatch shouldn't add another battery meter to keep an eye on.

High-fashion, Low-function
The Citizen Eco-Drive Proximity is far and away the best looking smartwatch out there?it looks and feels like one of Citizen's normal, high-end watches. Compared with the Pebble or Metawatch, however, the Proximity is lacking in the features department, which is ostensibly the reason you get a watch like this in the first place. It feels more like a high-end watch first, with its smartwatch features as an afterthought. If you were already in the market for a nice timepiece, though, and the smart notification features are just an added bonus, the Proximity is a sharp-looking and capable device.?

Compulsory insurance products and you - Vanguard News

By ROSEMARY ONUOHA

The National Insurance Commission, NAICOM, in 2010 came up with the Market Development and Restructuring Initiative, MDRI, as part of efforts to boost insurance penetration in the country. Part of the objectives of the MDRI is to enforce the compulsory insurance under the Insurance Act of 2003. But so far, greater number of the general public is yet to buy into the initiative.

The reason is not farfetched.? The Nigerian public to a very large extent has a negative perception about insurance. Although the sector is changing for the better, it has not been easy to convince Nigerians.

Unfortunately though, this poor perception is negatively affecting the growth of the sector, it is high time Nigerians began to see insurance in a new light.

*Pensioners queuing for verification

*Pensioners queuing for verification

Oftentimes, Nigerians say that there is no value attached to insurance, but the truth is that insurance offers a lot of value.

Take for instance, people think that putting on the seat belt in a car is to prevent law enforcement agents from arresting them, whereas the purpose is to save lives.

There is no gainsaying the obvious that the loss of confidence from the general public in the insurance sector is as a result of indiscipline.

Insurance operators on their part, know that indiscipline and unprofessionalism have impacted negatively on their businesses over the years, as such, are employing all positive means to? win back the confidence of the general public.

An insurance practitioner once said ?We insurance practitioners are not disciplined professionals and as long as we remain indisciplined, some of those practices that we come out and criticise openly and go back to? privately will continue.?

The compulsory insurances
Compulsory insurances are those classes of insurance made compulsory by law, with the objective of providing protection to third parties and the general public.? The following types of insurance are compulsory in Nigeria:

. Builders Liability ? under the Insurance Act 2003/under the Lagos State Building Control Law 2010
. Construction All Risks
. Occupiers Liability ? under the Insurance Act 2003 and Lagos State Law
. Employers Liability ? (Group Life) ? under the Pension Reform Act 2004
. Healthcare Professional Indemnity ? under the NHIS Act 1999
. Motor Third Party Liability ? under the Insurance Act 2003

Builders Liability Insurance
This type of insurance requires that all owners or contractors of buildings under construction (more than 2 floors), must purchase to provide compensation in event of bodily injury, death and property damage to workers at construction sites and affected members of the public in the event of collapse of the building and other construction risks. The penalty for non-compliance is N250, 000 plus three years imprisonment. Record of conviction, sealing-off and demolition of the building are the penalties provided under the federal and Lagos State laws.

Occupiers Liability Insurance
This type of insurance requires that all owners or occupiers of public buildings, whether private or public, to provide under the National Insurance Act 2003 and the Lagos State Building Control Law 2010. A ?public building? is any building that is not 100 per cent used by the owner for residential purposes. Public buildings include tenement houses, hostels, residential buildings occupied by tenants, lodgers or licensees, and any other building to which members of the public enter and exit for the purpose of educational, recreational or medical services (e.g. schools, cinemas, hospitals, malls, petrol stations, etc).

Occupiers Liability Insurance provides compensation in events of bodily injury, death and property damage to the business users and members of the public in the event of building collapse, fire, earthquakes, storm or flood. The penalty for non-compliance is N100, 000 plus one year imprisonment, and sealing-off or demolition of the building under the federal and the Lagos State laws.

Employer?s Liability (Group Life) Insurance
This type of insurance requires that all employers of labour with more than four employees are required to have under the Pension Reform Act 2004. The law requires the employers have insurance that will provide for compensation in the event of death, disappearance, disability, or critical illness suffered by staff while in service and to subsidize pension provision in the event of mental or physical disability.

This law applies to both public and private sector employees. This means that employees (and their families) have the right to demand compensation and payment from their employers in the event of injury or death. The penalty for non-compliance with this law is N250,000, record of conviction, and in addition the place of business may be sealed up.

Healthcare Professional Indemnity Insurance
This type of insurance requires that all licensed health care providers and medical practitioners (such as doctors, nurses, pharmacists, etc) are required to have under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) 1999. The law? have insurance that will protect their patients in case of accidents or fatalities (death) resulting from professional negligence.

This type of insurance provides compensation to patients and their relatives in the event of involuntary murder, disability, shock and injury suffered by patients as a result of the negligence of Health Care Providers. The penalty for non-compliance with this law is a possible revocation of licence by the National Health Insurance Council, a record of conviction, and sealing-off of the premises.

Third Party Motor Liability Insurance
This is the minimum insurance that all owners and drivers of motor vehicles, motorcycles and special type vehicles plying the Nigerian roads are required to have under the National Insurance Act 2003. The third party motor liability insures the motor vehicle against liability as to death, bodily injury or damage to property of a third parties arising from the use of the vehicle. The penalty for non-compliance is a fine of up to N250,000 plus one year imprisonment.
