Dr. Jane Greer: Russell Crowe: Can You Really ... - Huffington Post

Russell Crowe and his wife of nine years, Danielle Spencer, announced their separation recently after nine years of marriage. The two were on opposite sides of the globe when the news broke -- she in Australia shooting "Dancing With The Stars", and he in Los Angeles shooting the film "Noah." Their whereabouts might be an indication of what went wrong in their marriage. Did their careers take priority over their personal lives?

You have to ask yourself the question: which comes first, my home life or my work? Sometimes there's no easy answer. There is a time in many people's lives when they wonder if they've compromised one for the other. Everyone who has a passion for what they do has struggled to balance work and family. For celebrities, the choice can be particularly hard since their projects often take them far away for long periods of time, but you don't have to be a star to grapple with this tug-of-war.

This dilemma can strike at different stages of people's lives: being too busy to find love, being taken away from a boyfriend or new spouse by work demands, or having to choose between your children and your job. At some point, you will most likely be forced to make a decision. So the question becomes: How much is too much? And how much of a toll does work take?

Having a career certainly shouldn't preclude you from having a fulfilling romantic and home life, but sometimes people become so consumed with their work that it depletes the energy that they might otherwise be able to spend on personal commitments. For example, Abigail, one of my patients, completely threw herself into her work. Because she could make time only for the occasional date, it became impossible for her to develop a real relationship. She feels there is no other option for her but to take on more creative responsibility if she wants to build her career and continue to move up the ladder. The risk, however, is that if she doesn't make some room now for her romantic life, she may lose the opportunity to have one.

What if you're the person left at home repeatedly, as my patient Ellen and her baby recently were while her husband worked on a big project? Or what if your boyfriend has to move to another city in order to tackle his new promotion? In fact, when my patient Claire's boyfriend moved, he was working toward financial stability so he could feel secure and ready to propose to her. However, she took it personally and thought he wasn't committed to the relationship because he moved away. It is easy to feel that your partner is choosing the office over you; they, however, typically don't see it as a choice but rather their professional responsibility.

If this is going on with the person you are dating or married to, try to step back and consider what's motivating them to invest so much energy into their work. Also, it might be helpful to have a conversation with them to see if they can put some checks and balances in place at work in order to make some personal time. If you're the one who's been overwhelmed with work and not making it home until after 9:00 p.m. or missing a Friday night with your family, give your loved one fair warning. That way, they can make other plans and not feel ignored or abandoned.

It is important to take the time to figure out your work-life balance. You will want to preserve the emotional intimacy you share with your partner because that can ultimately help sustain you as you make your way in the world -- and up the corporate ladder.

iPad mini has advanced software to detect unintended touches around the screens bezel

iPad mini has advanced software to detect unintended touches around the screens bezelApple officially announced the iPad mini at its special media event yesterday and one of the things that stands out on the iPad mini is the thinness of the bezel surrounding the screen. if you compare the new iPad with the iPad mini, you can see in portrait mode that the bezel on the left and right hand side is much slimmer on the iPad mini. One of the problems with a thin bezel is that it makes holding the device much harder without actually touching the screen and inadvertently interacting with the software on the touch screen. Thankfully Apple has taken care of the problem with some advanced software.

iPad mini is small. But when you use it, it doesn?t feel small. That?s because it?s designed to give you the maximum amount of screen in the minimum amount of space. To achieve that, we had to rethink the relationship between the screen and the overall shape of the product. iPad has symmetrical bezels around all of its edges. But for iPad mini, we reduced the width of the bezels on two sides of the display. So although the screen is smaller, it?s even more prominent. Rethinking the screen meant we also had to rethink the software behind it. iPad mini intelligently recognizes whether your thumb is simply resting on the display or whether you?re intentionally interacting with it. It?s the kind of detail you?ll notice ? by not noticing it. And it?s a great example of how Apple hardware and software work together to give you the best experience possible.

So according to Apple, you don't need to worry about inadvertently touching the screen when you're holding the iPad mini. We will be interested to see how good the software is in real world situations but Apple appears confident enough to make us aware that it exists so we wouldn't be surprised if it works exactly as intended.

GSLIS Jobs and Opportunities Blog ? Call for papers, Computer ...

December 7 ? 9, 2012
Sponsored by the University of Bridgeport
Technically co-sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society, Communications Society and Education Society (Connecticut Section)

CONFERENCE OVERVIEW

CISSE 2012 provides a virtual forum for presentation and discussion of the state-of the-art research on computers, information and systems sciences and engineering. CISSE 2012 is the eighth conference of the CISSE series of e-conferences. CISSE is the World?s first Engineering/Computing and Systems Research E-Conference. CISSE 2005 was the first high-caliber Research Conference in the world to be completely conducted online in real-time via the internet. In 2005, CISSE received 255 research paper submissions and the final program included 140 accepted papers, from more than 45 countries. Last year, CISSE 2011 received more than 300 submissions and the final program included 105 accepted papers, from more than 80 countries.

The virtual conference will be conducted through the Internet using web-conferencing tools, made available by the conference. Authors will be presenting their PowerPoint, audio or video presentations using web-conferencing tools without the need for travel. Conference sessions will be broadcast to all the conference participants, where session participants can interact with the presenter during the presentation and/or during the Q&A slot that follows the presentation. This international conference will be held entirely on-line. The accepted and presented papers will be made available and sent to the authors after the conference both on a DVD (including all papers, PowerPoint presentations and audio presentations) and as a book publication. Springer, the official publisher for CISSE, published the previous seven CISSE book proceedings.

Conference participants ? authors, presenters and attendees ? only need an internet connection and sound available on their computers in order to be able to contribute and participate in this international ground-breaking conference. The on-line structure of this high-quality event will allow academic professionals and industry participants to contribute their work and attend world-class technical presentations based on rigorously refereed submissions, live, without the need for investing significant travel funds or time out of the office.

The concept and format of CISSE is ground-breaking. The PowerPoint presentations, final paper manuscripts and time schedule for live presentations over the web had been available for weeks prior to the start of the conference for all registrants, so that the participants can choose the presentations they want to attend and think about questions that they might want to ask. The live audio presentations were also recorded and are part of the permanent CISSE on-line archive ? accessible to all registrants- which also includes all the papers, PowerPoint and audio presentations.

Potential non-author conference attendees who cannot make the on-line conference dates are encouraged to register, as the entire joint conferences will be archived for future viewing.

The CISSE conference audio room provides superb audio even over low speed internet connections, the ability to display PowerPoint presentations, and cross-platform compatibility (the conferencing software runs on Windows, Mac, and any other operating system that supports Java). In addition, the conferencing system allowed for an unlimited number of participants, which in turn granted us the opportunity to allow all CISSE participants to attend all presentations, as opposed to limiting the number of available seats for each session.

Prospective authors are invited to submit full papers electronically in Microsoft Word or Adobe PDF format through the website of the conference at: http://www.cisseconference.org/2012

Accepted papers must be presented in the virtual conference by one of the authors. To submit your paper, please visit http://www.cisseconference.org/2012

Ten Things That Have Surprised Me About Early Motherhood ...

by Lara on October 24, 2012

I am now nearly eleven weeks into motherhood.

It is exhausting.

It is exhilarating.

It is challenging and emotional and yes, rewarding.

You know what else? ?It?s surprising.

Ten Things That Have Surprised Me About Early Motherhood

  1. The first few weeks are a unique sort of Heaven and Hell. ??It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,? is how I will always look back at my baby?s first month of life. ?Sure, you hear about how newborns sleep a lot and how blissful it is to gaze at this new life you created. ?But no one warns you how completely inadequate you will feel every time your child cries. ?No one tells you that you might be secretly afraid to hold your own baby because it feels like their little head is going to bobble off their body. ?Or that breastfeeding at first is THE HARDEST THING EVER. ?And certainly, no one tells you about the overwhelming fear of SIDS that keeps you up even when your baby is sleeping.
  2. ?Mommy brain? is real. ?I used to think this term was created by some sort of underground mothers coalition to use as an excuse for practically everything. ?Forgot to shave? ?Mommy brain. ?Ran a red light? ?Mommy brain. ?But the first time someone asked me for my child?s birth date and I gave them my own, I realized the scary truth. My brain really has turned to mush.
  3. The amount of things I can accomplish one-handed. The first day I was home alone with G, I didn?t pee from 9am until 4pm. ?Now I can practically cook an entire meal with just five fingers.
  4. Phantom baby cries. In the shower, in an exercise class, in the car driving solo. ?A baby?s cry is now permanently recorded in my brain.
  5. You can live in fear of something that weighs seven pounds. ?Babies cry. ?That was one of the last things my midwife told me before discharging us from the hospital. ?Yet somehow when we?re out in public, the thought of my baby crying is incredibly anxiety-inducing. ?I am still learning to get out of the house and feel confident that I can meet his needs outside of our comfort zone.
  6. How easily you become ?that mom.? I swore I would never post my child?s picture all over the internet. ?Now he is overexposed on basically all social media platforms, and I regularly text friends and family with updates on his development and growth. ?I write status updates complaining about a lack of sleep and stacks of laundry. ?I am. ?That Mom.
  7. You stop caring about what other people think. ?Childbirth really does something to a girl?s sense of modesty. ?But more than that, I get the whole Mama Bear thing now. ?Pre-baby, I like to think I was pretty polite. ?Some even said I was overly apologetic. ?Nowadays, if you want to hold my baby, here is the hand sanitizer. ?And if you?re uncomfortable with breastfeeding, you?d better leave when he is hungry.
  8. You develop a whole new appreciation for your own parents. ?It sounds selfish, but one of the first thoughts I had when I held my baby for the first time was actually a realization about my own upbringing: If my parents love me even half this much, I have been loved so much more than I ever knew.
  9. You?re still the same person. People like to warn you that there is a you BB (Before Baby) and AB (After Baby). ?And while my waist may never return to its BB size, I am still a crazy dog lady. ?I still worship big hair?and country music. ?You have a baby, and on one hand, you are the same. ?On the other hand?
  10. You?ll never be the same again. My sister sent me the link to a blog post when I was about eight months pregnant that I couldn?t fully relate to at the time. ?I have returned to it many times since my baby?s birth, because now I understand. ?I will quote the author directly, because I cannot better express the sentiment that she has so beautifully written:

This is the thing that women don?t tell each other about motherhood. That you will never be who you were. That you will not see anything the way you used to see it, you will never hear language the way you used to hear it, music, color, photos, friends, family, career path?nothing or no one came through my transition from single woman to mother unexamined. Least of all myself.

?and now if you?ll excuse me, I think I just heard my baby cry. ?I think.

How Tumors Exploit Gut Flora to Fuel Growth, and the Surprising Finding that Chemotherapy Boosts Resistant Cancer

    By Dr. Mercola

Could your gut flora play a role in cancer growth? According to recent research, the answer is a tentative yes.

Findings published in the journal?Nature1?report the discovery of microbial-dependent mechanisms through which some cancers mount an inflammatory response that fuels their development and growth. These findings provide new insight into how cancer cells can hijack your body's inflammatory reaction by exploiting microbial-dependent immune cells.

    As reported by?Medical News Today:2

"The association between chronic inflammation and tumor development has long been known from the early work of German pathologist Rudolph Virchow. Harvard University pathologist Harold Dvorak later compared tumors with 'wounds that never heal,' noting the similarities between normal inflammation processes that characterize wound- healing and tumorigenesis or tumor-formation.

Indeed, 15 to 20 percent of all cancers are preceded by chronic inflammation - a persistent immune response that can target both diseased and healthy tissues... Still, most cancers are not preceded by chronic inflammation.?

On the other hand, they exploit ubiquitous, infiltrating immune cells to unduly provoke and hijack the host inflammatory reaction. Until now, the mechanism of so-called 'tumor-elicited inflammation,' which is detected in most solid malignancies, was poorly explained.

'The tumor-associated inflammatory reaction... may hold the keys for future preventive and therapeutic measures,' said first author Sergei Grivennikov, Ph.D?

Noting that studies of long-term users of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin, have revealed that general inhibition of inflammation reduces the risk of cancer death by up to 45 percent, depending on the type of cancer. 'So inhibition of inflammation during cancer development may be beneficial.'"

How Even Beneficial Gut Bacteria Might Spur Colon Cancer Growth

The research centered around colon cancer. What may be surprising is that the intestinal bacteria involved in this inflammatory mechanism are not necessarily the pathogenic variety, but rather ordinarily benign microflora.?

The reason for this is because as the tumor develops, it disrupts the normal, healthy functioning of tissues, and because tumors lack a particular protein that normally coats and protects tissue cells, normal microflora present in your colon can enter the tumor. Since the bacteria does not "belong" there, your immune cells recognize them as invaders, and launch an inflammatory response.

The presence of microbial products are also picked up by macrophages (white blood cells) and immune cells within the tumor, which in turn produce cytokines that further spurs the inflammatory process. One of the primary cytokines involved is Interleukin-23, which regulates inflammation and triggers the production of other inflammatory cytokines that promote tumor development and progression.

The researchers were able to reduce tumor-elicited inflammation and tumor growth by using a combination of broad-spectrum antibiotics. Antibiotics, as you probably know, indiscriminately kill off all types of intestinal bacteria, and by reducing the normal microflora, tumor growth and related inflammation diminished.

    According to Grivennikov:3

"This is a very nice demonstration of how tumor-elicited inflammation in cancers that arise in the absence of underlying chronic inflammatory disease can be induced... The next step is to look for the upregulation of Interleukin-23 and related cytokines in colon cancer patients, inhibit these cytokines and determine whether these impact cancer progression and response to therapy."

While tumor growth and tumor-elicited inflammation was reduced, I would caution you to not get confused and think that heavy-handed antibiotic use might spare you from colon cancer. I believe this would be a serious mistake... The key, I think, is to place a greater focus on optimizing gut health, to prevent and naturally counteract the development of inflammation in the first place.?

The idea that you might be able to halt colon cancer proliferation by eradicating your microflora, or designing a drug to prevent cytokine production is bound to cause some serious side effects. Cytokine production occurs in response to inflammation, so just inhibiting them is not actually going to?resolve?the underlying inflammation...

And you clearly cannot be healthy without normal gut flora, so eradicating it to prevent tumor growth would likely be disastrous in the long term. What you want to do is encourage the proliferation of beneficial bacteria, which by competitive inhibition, will limit or decimate the populations of pathogenic bacteria, yeasts and fungi. This is largely done by limiting fuel for the pathogens, which would include sugars and non-fibrous carbs, and providing loads of beneficial bacterial supplements like fermented vegetables.

As Grivennikov says, inhibiting inflammation during cancer development is likely a vital component of prevention. The question is how to properly inhibit inflammation, and in my view, inhibiting inflammation through healthy lifestyle choices makes a whole lot of sense, as opposed to taking drugs.

Your Gut Affects Your Metabolism and Genetic Expression

As time goes on, we're gaining more and more information about the important roles gut flora plays in maintaining overall health. The good news is that this is an area you can exercise a lot of control over. Your diet can quickly alter the composition of your gut flora. Processed foods high in sugar and chemical additives and low in nutrients is a surefire way to decimate the beneficial bacteria in your gut, allowing the harmful pathogenic kind to thrive.

Research has also shown that your microflora has a significant impact on gene expression, such as the genes responsible for vitamin biosynthesis and metabolism.?Probiotics?have been found to influence the activity of hundreds of your genes, helping them to express in a positive, disease-fighting manner ? some of which affect your body in a manner resembling the effects of certain medicines. Probiotics (healthy bacteria) has over 30 beneficial pharmacological actions that we know of, including those listed below.4

Note that probiotics downregulate interleukin-6, one of several cytokines involved in inflammatory processes, so probiotics may turn out to be an important player in helping to inhibit cytokine production ? as suggested by Grivennikov above ? and control inflammation that might otherwise lead to colon cancer:

    Anti-bacterial Anti-allergenic Anti-viral Immunomodulatory
Anti-infective Antioxidant Antiproliferative Apoptopic (cellular self-destruction)
    Antidepressive Antifungal Cardioprotective Gastroprotective
Radio- and chemo protective Upregulates glutathione and certain glycoproteins that help regulate immune responses, including interleukin-4, interleukin-10, and interleukin-12 Downregulates interleukin-6 (a cytokine involved in chronic inflammation and age-related diseases) Inhibits tumor necrosis factor (TNF) alpha inhibitor, NF-kappaB, epidermal growth factor receptor, and more

The Ideal Way to Optimize Your Gut Health

Historically, people didn't have the same problems with their gut health as we do today for the simple fact that they got large quantities of beneficial bacteria from their diet in the form of fermented or cultured foods, which were invented long before the advent of refrigeration and other forms of food preservation.

You can ferment virtually any food, and every traditional culture has traditionally fermented their foods to prevent spoilage. There are also many fermented beverages and yoghurts. Quite a large percent of all the foods that people consumed on a daily basis were fermented, and each 2-3 ounce serving of an ideally prepared food can provide?trillions?of beneficial bacteria ? far more than you can get from any probiotic supplement.

In fact, it's unusual to find a probiotic supplement containing more than 10 billion colony-forming units, but when my team tested fermented vegetables produced by probiotic starter cultures, they had?10 trillion?colony-forming units of bacteria. Literally, one serving of vegetables was equal to an entire bottle of a high potency probiotic! Fermented foods also give you a wider variety of beneficial bacteria, so all in all, it's your most cost effective alternative.

Fermenting your own foods is a fairly straight-forward and simple process, and can provide even greater savings. To learn more, please listen to my interview with Caroline Barringer, a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner (NTP) who has been involved with nutrition for about 20 years.

Chemotherapy Can Boost Cancer Growth, Study Finds

A related news story again highlights the need to revise how we treat cancer and how we view cancer prevention. Chemotherapy is a staple of the?cut, poison, burn?paradigm that is conventional cancer treatment, despite the evidence against it. According to research published in the journal?Nature Medicine,5?chemotherapy can damage healthy cells in such a way that they begin secreting a protein (WNT16B) that not only protects cancer cells and promotes their survival, but can also cause the tumors to be resistant to further chemotherapy treatment.

In a nutshell, what we're talking about is chemotherapy-resistant cancer... caused by the initial treatment. It's difficult to think of a worse scenario than this. The finding was reportedly "completely unexpected," and was only discovered because they were trying to determine why cancer cells can be easily killed in a lab setting yet remain so resilient inside your body. The results were confirmed on breast and ovarian cancer tumors.Co-author Peter Nelson of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle told AFP:6

"The increase in WNT16B was completely unexpected... WNT16B, when secreted, would interact with nearby tumor cells and cause them to grow, invade, and importantly, resist subsequent therapy..."

The researchers speculate that adding an antibody to WNT16B to the chemotherapy might improve the response rate and kill off more cancer cells. Another alternative might be to use smaller, less toxic doses of chemotherapy to reduce the damage to healthy cells.

Getting to the Root of the Problem

I strongly believe the cancer rates are escalating because they are in no way shape or form addressing the underlying cause of most cancers. Instead, most of the research is directed towards expensive drugs that target late stages of the disease and greatly enrich the drug companies but simply do not prevent cancer. If ever there was an area in which an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure it is cancer. I strongly believe that if you are able to work your way up to?the advanced level of my health plan, that you will virtually eliminate your risk of most cancers.

Environmental and lifestyle factors are increasingly being pinpointed as the primary culprits fueling our cancer epidemic. This includes:

    ?

This is clearly not an exhaustive list as such a list would be exceedingly long. For more specifics on consumer products implicated as contributors to cancer, please review the Cancer Prevention Coalition's "Dirty Dozen" list.7

Medical researchers would like you to believe they're doing everything they can to come up with a solution. Yet all we see is research into newer drug therapies. Clearly they're not digging close enough to the root of the problem, because if they did, they'd touch on some of these lifestyle issues just mentioned. From my perspective, you ignore lifestyle factors at your own peril when it comes to cancer... Because, clearly, drug-based "advances" are?not?making a dent in this progressively prevalent disease.

REAL Cancer Advancements that Need to Become Mainstream Knowledge

In the last 30 years the global cancer burden has?doubled, and it will likely double again between 2000 and 2020, and?nearly triple by 2030?? unless people begin to take?cancer prevention?seriously. We CAN turn this trend around, but to do so the medical community must?stop overlooking?the methods that can actually have a significant impact.

Three cancer advancements in particular merit special mention. These advancements have not yet been accepted by conventional medicine, and they must be.

Number 1: Vitamin D?? There's overwhelming evidence pointing to the fact that?vitamin D?deficiency plays a crucial role in cancer development. Researchers within this field have estimated that about?30 percent of cancer deaths?could be prevented each year simply by optimizing the vitamin D levels in the general population. And if you are being treated for cancer it is likely that higher blood levels ? probably around 80-90 ng/ml ? would be a beneficial adjunct to your treatment plan. To learn the details on how to use vitamin D therapeutically, please review my previous article,?Test Values and Treatment for Vitamin D Deficiency.

The health benefits of optimizing your levels, either by safe sun exposure (ideally), a safe tanning bed, or oral supplementation as a last resort, simply cannot be overstated. In terms of protecting against cancer, vitamin D has been found to offer protection in a number of ways, including:

    • Regulating genetic expression
    • Increasing the self-destruction of mutated cells (which, if allowed to replicate, could lead to cancer)
    • Reducing the spread and reproduction of cancer cells
    • Causing cells to become differentiated (cancer cells often lack differentiation)
    • Reducing the growth of new blood vessels from pre-existing ones, which is a step in the transition of dormant tumors turning cancerous

Number 2: Optimizing Your Insulin Levels?? Normalizing your insulin levels is one of the most powerful physical actions you can take to lower your risk of cancer. Otto Warburg actually received a Nobel Prize for his research on cancer cell physiology in 1934, which clearly demonstrated cancer cells require more sugar to thrive. Unfortunately, very few oncologists appreciate or apply this knowledge today.

High levels of insulin can cause major damage to your body. The most recognized of these is diabetes, but that is far from the only one. As Ron Rosedale, M.D. said in one of my most popular articles,?Insulin and Its Metabolic Effects:

"It doesn't matter what disease you are talking about, whether you are talking about a common cold or cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis or cancer, the root is always going to be at the molecular and cellular level, and I will tell you that insulin is going to have its hand in it, if not totally control it."

The good news is that controlling your insulin levels is relatively straightforward. First, limit your intake of processed foods, grains and sugars/fructose as much as possible to prevent your insulin levels from becoming elevated in the first place. Replace them with healthy fats such as butter, animal fat, coconut oil, avocados, seeds and nuts.

I recently completed ten hours of interviews with Dr. Rosedale in which he goes FAR deeper into his philosophy and recommendations. I was floored at what I learned and he has once again changed my position on many important nutritional issues. One of the KEY new insights is that you need to LIMIT your protein to no more than your basic requirements, which is about one gram per kilogram of LEAN body mass, which is typically less than 70 grams for most people. If you go over this you will upregulate the mTOR pathways, which has been strongly associated with increasing your risk for cancer.

I am very excited to share this information with you once we review it as it is possible that this can help?the treatment of most cancers. And it is all done with dietary regulation. Supplements can be used, but they are optional and only make the transition to fat burning metabolism easier.

Number 3: Exercise?? If you are like most people, when you think of reducing your risk of cancer, exercise doesn't immediately come to mind. However, there is some fairly compelling evidence that exercise can slash your risk of cancer.

One of the primary ways exercise lowers your risk for cancer is by reducing elevated insulin levels, which creates a low sugar environment that discourages the growth and spread of cancer cells. Additionally, exercise improves the circulation of immune cells in your blood. Your immune system is your first line of defense against everything from minor illnesses like a cold right up to devastating, life-threatening diseases like cancer.

The trick about exercise, though, is understanding how to use it as a precise tool. This ensures you are getting enough to achieve the benefit, not too much to cause injury, and the right variety to balance your entire physical structure and maintain strength and flexibility, and aerobic and anaerobic fitness levels. This is why it is helpful to view exercise like a drug that needs to be carefully prescribed to achieve its maximum benefit.

It's important to include a large variety of techniques in your exercise routine, such as strength training, aerobics, core-building activities, and stretching. Most important of all, however, is to make sure you include?high-intensity, burst-type exercise, once or twice a week, in which you raise your heart rate up to your anaerobic threshold for 20 to 30 seconds, and then you recover for 90 seconds. These exercises activate your super-fast twitch muscle fibers, which can increase your body's natural production of human growth hormone.

Winning the War Against Cancer Begins with Your Personal Choices

You can do a lot, right now, to significantly decrease your cancer risk. Even the conservative American Cancer Society states that one-third of cancer deaths are linked to poor diet, physical inactivity, and carrying excess weight. So, in addition to the main three suggestions listed above, making the following healthy lifestyle changes can go a very long way toward avoiding all forms of cancer:

    1. Eat a healthy diet of whole organic foods, and pay careful attention to keeping your insulin levels down by avoiding sugar/fructose and grains. I make this easy with my recently updated and free?Nutrition Plan. The key here is to radically reduce your sugar and non-fiber carbs to an absolute minimum and limit your protein to one gram per one kilogram of lean body mass.
    2. Only 25 percent of people eat enough vegetables, so by all means eat as many vegetables as you are comfortable with. Ideally, they should be fresh and organic.?Cruciferous vegetables?in particular have been identified as having potent anti-cancer properties. Remember that carb nutritional types may need up to 300 percent more vegetables than protein nutritional types.
    3. Get appropriate amounts of high quality animal-based omega-3 fats.
    4. Have a tool to permanently erase the neurological short-circuiting that can activate cancer genes. Even the CDC states that 85 percent of disease is caused by emotions. It is likely that this factor may be more important than all the other physical ones listed here, so make sure this is addressed. My particular favorite tool for this purpose, as you may know, is the?Emotional Freedom Technique.
    5. Maintain an ideal body fat percentage.
    6. Get enough high-quality sleep.
    7. Reduce your exposure to environmental toxins like pesticides, household chemical cleaners, synthetic air fresheners and air pollution.
    8. Reduce your use of cell phones and other wireless technologies, and implement as many?safety strategies?as possible if/when you cannot avoid their use.
    9. Boil, poach or steam your foods, rather than frying or charbroiling them.

Idaho St. suspends head coach Kramer 1 game

Idaho State has suspended football coach Mike Kramer. (AP)

Idaho State has suspended football coach Mike Kramer for this Saturday?s game at Montana for violating the university?s conduct policy, athletic director Jeff Tingey announced Tuesday.

Pocatello police and the university began investigating Kramer after wide receiver Derek Graves reported his coach shoved him to the ground during an Oct. 3 practice.

A video obtained by ESPN shows Kramer going face to face with a player wearing a helmet, then using two hands to shove the player, who falls to the ground.

Graves? attorney said his client suffered neck and back spasms as a result of the fall.

Idaho State associate head coach Don Bailey will serve as the acting head coach on Saturday at Montana.

San Juan wants to sell 2 historic buildings | city, capistrano, juan ...

San Juan Capistrano is looking to sell one of its oldest properties, a small piece of land on Ortega Highway containing two structures on the National Register of Historic Places.

The 0.35-acre parcel at 27762 Ortega Highway, about three-fourths of a mile east of Rancho Viejo Road, is home to the Parra Adobe and the Harrison House. The property and the structures have been owned by the city since 1979. Both buildings are vacant.

According to longtime San Juan resident Ilse Byrnes, the two-room Parra Adobe dates to the 1820s. The 808-square-foot structure has been used by the Capistrano Indian Council for museum displays and storage.

The single-story, wood-frame Harrison House was built in the early 1900s by farmer John Harrison. It has 1,478 square feet and features a living room, a dining room, a kitchen, two bedrooms and two quarter baths. It served as headquarters and a museum for the Capistrano Indian Council for more than 30 years.

"Both sites played an important role in San Juan's farming industry," Byrnes said.

The city is seeking proposals for real estate marketing services in order to sell the property, with conditions.

"Any site or building improvements, with the exception of maintenance, are required to comply with the secretary of the interior's standards for rehabilitation and the guidelines for rehabilitating historic buildings," according to the city's request for proposals.

Among the federal guidelines, the property's historic character must be preserved, chemical or physical treatments must be limited, and the property must be used as it was historically or given a new use that retains distinctive materials and features.

The Harrison House got a structural rehab in a 2006 city project. The Parra Adobe, formerly a museum for the Capistrano Indian Council, has a brace holding up one of its walls. The city estimated in 2010 that rehabilitating the adobe with seismic retrofitting could cost $400,000.

"It will take a special buyer who has an interest in history to purchase it," Byrnes said.

The city hopes selling the property will:

? Provide private ownership that will put it to productive economic use consistent with its zoning district, single-family residential.

? Provide for private rehabilitation of the Parra Adobe.

? Provide for ongoing private maintenance of the land and structures.

The city plans to determine the minimum purchase price once it selects its real estate consultant.

Proposals are due by 5:30 p.m. Nov. 15 to Cathy Salcedo, executive-services manager, at City Hall, 32400 Paseo Adelanto, San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675. The City Council could approve a final bid Dec. 4, the city said.

For more information, contact Salcedo at 949-443-6317 or csalcedo@sanjuancapistrano.org.

Dreamweaver Tutorial: Meta Tags and Search Engine Optimization ...

Interesting as I?m now working on? SEO, myself, for my site. I?ve been talking to the SEO specialists at Google and they seem to feel that keywords are practically valueless,? as the search engines place practically no importance anymore to keywords since anything can be put here and has been abused in the past. Also, they say that the use of the H1 heading can?t be used too much or it will lose it?s value. What is your feeling about the best method for SEO? Is it paying for advertising? Thanks.

Denied dream wedding site, lesbian couple files complaint

By NBC News staff and The Associated Press

Two?New York state women who were denied their dream wedding site because they are gay have filed a discrimination complaint that?could set a precedent for whether businesses can choose their clientele.

The complaint with the state Division of Human Rights appears to be a first involving a wedding venue since same-sex marriage became legal in New York in July 2011, according to advocates on both sides of the issue. One prominent gay marriage opponent said the case could test the breadth of the law's religious freedom language.

Melisa Erwin and Jennie McCarthy, both 29 and of Albany, filed the complaint on Oct. 11 after Liberty Ridge Farm said they would not host their wedding next summer. The two women have been together for three years, according to WNYT-TV.

When the owners, Robert and Cynthia Gifford, found out they were gay, they refused to book their wedding.?

Erwin told WNYT-TV's Abigail Bleck that Cynthia Gifford said that when she found out, ?Well, now we have a problem.?

?When we asked why,? Erwin said,?Cynthia Gifford replied, ?My husband and I have been married a really long time and it?s great that you?re getting married, but you can?t do it here.?

Robert Gifford told WNYT-TV: ?I think it?s our right to choose who we market to, like any business.?

The farm has refused to allow two gay couples to get married at their venue, WNYT-TV reported.

?We are a family business and we feel we ought to stay down the family path,? Gifford said.

The couple is no longer considering the farm as a wedding venue, but McCarthy said, "we just want to know that the policy is being changed to fit the laws so this doesn't happen to anyone else."

People took to Liberty Ridge Farm?s Facebook page to post messages of disgust or support.

Wrote one commenter beneath images of a family harvest event: ?Stay on the family path. These are individuals who have no respect for Christian beliefs or moral beliefs. You done the right thing. They are the ones that are in the wrong.?

New York law exempts some religious-oriented institutions from having to accommodate same-sex weddings.

But Attorney David Fallon told WNYT-TV the law does not allow a ?place of public accommodation? to discriminate but that judges haven?t interpreted the law.

?It seems like the women would have a strong argument that it is a place of public accommodation,? Fallon said.

If state officials determine there is a case of discrimination, they can order Liberty Ridge to take appropriate action and can set monetary damages. The division's administrative determination can be appealed to state courts.

There is at least one similar court case in New York. In September, a gay couple in Manhattan filed a lawsuit against a restaurant they allege canceled their?rehearsal dinner and refused to cater their wedding after a manager said he did not want any "gay parties." The restaurant disputes the claim.

In August, a Vermont inn agreed to pay a $10,000 civil penalty to that state's Human Rights Commission and to place $20,000 in a charitable trust to settle a lawsuit that accused the business of refusing to host a wedding reception for two women.

Back in New York, Erwin emphasized on WNYT-TV?s Facebook page that she and McCarthy are not suing.

?We are not seeking compensation,? she said. ?We are seeking a change in policy.?
