Can someone compare lung cancer to skin cancer?

- Chosen by Voters There are different types of each, ranging from more to less malignant. The differences come down to incidence (how often they happen) and likelihood to metastasize, or spread to other parts of the body.Skin cancer is by far more common, but other than melanoma or an advanced squamous cell carcinoma is unlikely to spread to the rest of the body. Lung cancer is rarer, particularly in people who don't smoke, but has much greater potential to spread to the rest of the body compared to skin cancers, with the possible exception of melanoma.Skin cancers include (off the top of my head) basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma, as well as some rare lymphomas of the cutaneous lymphatic tissue. Lung cancers are generally divided up into small cell (extremely nasty) and non-small cell carcinomas. You can also get lymphomas that begin in the lungs. Most lung cancers are adenocarcinomas, meaning they start in cells that secrete something. Most skin cancers come from epithelial cells, or cells that line something. The treatment for most skin cancers is pretty simple: cut it out/off. This works for lung cancer as well, but the problem with lung cancer is getting 'clear margins', a 1-2cm zone of tissue around the tumor. If this bubble of tissue includes something you need for later, like the aorta or heart, getting a complete resection (surgical removal) of the tumor is harder. Also, the surgery is much more significant because you have to get into the chest to get it out. If the lung cancer has spread beyond the lymph nodes on the side of the tumor, it becomes very hard to remove all the cancer with surgery.
